Frequently asked questions

How does Swim Trainer calculate Critical Swim Speed (CSS)?
CSS is derived from two maximal time trials — 400 m and 200 m — using the Wakayoshi 1992 linear speed–endurance model. The resulting pace defines your highest sustainable aerobic threshold: the speed you can hold for approximately 30 minutes before lactate accumulates. CSS is the most reliable predictor of pool performance and is used to set all aerobic training zones within the app.
What is SWOLF and why does it matter?
SWOLF equals your stroke count per length plus the time in seconds to complete that length. A lower SWOLF indicates higher swimming efficiency. Tracking SWOLF trends over weeks of training reveals whether drill work is improving technique or whether efficiency breaks down under fatigue.
Which devices are compatible with Swim Trainer?
Swim Trainer works on iPhone (iOS 16 or later) and reads Apple Watch workout data (Series 4 or later). Garmin data can be imported by file. All data is processed locally on the device — no cloud account or internet connection is required.
Can I coach multiple athletes at once?
Yes. The multi-athlete view lets you build and track separate training plans for each swimmer, adapt sessions by event type and training phase, and export structured session documents to share directly with athletes.
Is athlete data private?
All training data is stored and processed locally on your device. No advertising trackers are embedded. Data is never sent to external servers unless the coach explicitly activates the optional sharing feature.
